Ted Ellis

Artist, Ted Ellis, paints memories of his childhood in New Orleans with his own unique “primitive” style that draws upon realism and impressionism.  This self-taught artist translates the essence of daily life in the deep south in each of his paintings.  The paintings are always a complete “story picture” that capture a moment in time from either a fond memory or a current event.  “Ellis creates much more than images.  He creates a mood…an atmosphere…and an awareness that one is actually on the scene…in the scene.”

Ellis currently resides in Friendswood, Texas.  His paintings have attracted many corporate collectors including Walt Disney Studios, Coca-Cola and Avon, Inc.  He has been featured in articles in magazines including Upscale and Southern Living

“Spirit of the South”

New Works by Ted Ellis

The Sylvan Gallery is delighted to announce the opening of an exhibit by renowned southern painter Ted Ellis. A reception to honor his new body of work, Spirit of the South, will be held on Nov. 6, 5:30-8:30 pm at 171 King St. Charleston, SC. The collection will be on display at the gallery through the end of the month. Ellis will be painting on location the next morning, Nov. 7, in Washington Park as part of the CFADA Fine Art Annual weekend.

The paintings in this latest collection are inspired by Ellis’ memories of his childhood in New Orleans. With a primitive style that is reminiscent of the Outsider Art movement, Ellis tells the stories of everyday African American life in the Deep South. His heavy brushstroke and frequent use of rich colors reveal the environmental influences of his rural subject matter. Motivated by teaching others about his style of life, Ellis says “I paint subjects that are representative of the many facets of American life as I know it. I like to think of myself as a creative historian. I was put here to record history…all aspects of American culture and heritage. My sole purpose has always been to educate through my art”.

The Sylvan Gallery is a member of the Charleston Fine Art Dealers Association, which created the Charleston Fine Art Weekend. This years events include opening receptions at participating galleries, a plein air demonstration, and the Annual Charleston Art Auction. More details about the weekends’ events can be found at www.cfada.com.
